A small studio in Sheffield
About Fretwork Guitar Tuition
One-to-one guitar lessons, in person and live online, taught by the same tutor from your first enquiry to your latest review. No marketplace, no matching system, no prices on this site.
Why the studio exists
A small studio can do one thing properly: teach the same learners consistently over months and years, adjusting as their goals change.
Fretwork started because too many learners were bouncing between options. Some had tried a marketplace, been matched with a tutor who did not suit them, and given up. Others had worked through video courses and hit a wall they could not diagnose on their own.
The answer here was not to add more tutors or a wider catalogue. It was to stay small enough that the tutor teaching you also plans your lessons, reads your progress, and remembers what you tried last month. That consistency is the whole point of keeping it small.
If a direction is not working for you, that shows up sooner in a small studio. We change the plan rather than pushing you through it.
Who teaches your lessons
Lessons are taught by the studio's own tutor, who handles the initial enquiry, the lesson planning and the teaching itself. You will not be handed to a different teacher partway through a course.
A tutor who has seen six months of your playing knows which habits to watch for and which pieces of advice you have already tried.
Starting fresh with someone new at the end of a term means losing that history. It also means repeating the same explanation you did not find useful the first time.
Questions worth asking any tutor
What we teach
We cover acoustic, electric and classical guitar, from first chords to exam standard. That means one-to-one guitar lessons built around the instrument you actually own, not a generic course plan.
- Pop and rock repertoire
- Blues, from twelve-bar to lead phrasing
- Folk fingerstyle and travis picking
- Classical repertoire and sight-reading
- Graded exam preparation, all boards
- Jazz and metal, where the request fits
We will say when something sits outside our strongest ground. Pointing a learner somewhere better is cheaper for everyone than three months of lessons that do not quite fit.
See styles and levelsFace-to-face and live online
The studio teaches in person and over video call, with the same one-to-one format in both. Online lessons exist for learners whose schedule or location makes travelling impractical, and they run the same way as an in-person session.
- Format
- One-to-one only, both in person and over video call. No group sessions and no shared classrooms.
- Where lessons happen
- In the studio at 12 Elm Grove, Brighton BN2 3ES, or wherever you practise with a stable connection and enough room to hold a guitar.
- What you need
- Your guitar and a tuner. For online sessions, a phone, tablet or laptop that can hold a video call is enough; a second angle on your hands helps but is not required.
- Switching formats
- Some learners use one format exclusively. Others move between them when work, study or travel changes. The lesson material carries across either way, so nothing gets rebuilt from scratch.
How we handle enquiries
We do not publish lesson prices on this site. Instead, you send a lesson enquiry describing what you want to play, your experience level, your preferred format and your rough availability. We reply with a recommendation and the practical details.
There is no obligation attached to the enquiry and no account to create. If the first session is not right, you are free to say so and stop there. Every enquiry is read by the tutor who would teach you, so the reply comes with a real plan attached rather than a booking link.
Ask a questionWhat to include
- The music you want to be able to play
- Whether you are starting out, returning, or mid-course
- In person in Sheffield or online
- Two or three times a week that usually work for you
You will get a reply from the tutor, usually within a day or two, with a suggested format and the next available slot.
Practice and progress
Progress comes from regular, short practice rather than any single lesson. We set specific weekly targets so you know what to work on and can tell whether you have done it. Nothing is left as "just practise more" — you get the bars, the tempo and the count of repetitions.
Every few months we review where you have got to, usually by comparing a current recording against an earlier one. Week-to-week progress is hard to feel when you hear your own playing every day; a recording from three months back is not.
Who we teach
Our learners are mostly adults, split between complete beginners and people returning to an instrument they played years ago. We also teach younger learners, with shorter sessions and songs chosen around what they actually want to play.
Complete beginners
First chords, first strumming patterns and the first song you can play end to end. We start with what you already listen to so the early weeks have something familiar in them.
Returning players
Usually the fastest progress of any group. The muscle memory is still there under the rust, so a few sessions fixing barre chord position and timing tend to uncover it.
Younger learners
Shorter sessions and songs they have chosen themselves. We are direct with parents about what to expect in the first term: a handful of chords and a piece they can play for someone.
It is a mixed group and that suits us. The teaching method does not change much between a 40-year-old beginner and a 14-year-old one, though the material and the pace do. If you are unsure which group you fall into, say so in your enquiry and we will work it out together.
What we don't do
We do not run group classes and we do not sell instruments or equipment. We do not publish prices online, and we do not promise a fixed outcome for a fixed number of lessons, because how fast you progress depends on how much you play between sessions.
Saying no to those things keeps the studio focused. If you want a group setting or you are shopping for a guitar, we are happy to point you towards someone who does that properly — no obligation and no sales pitch attached.
Questions before you get in touch
Short answers to the four things people ask most often before sending an enquiry.
How long has the studio been teaching?
We would rather not put a number on it here. What matters more is that lessons are planned individually and reviewed regularly, which you can judge in an initial session.
Do you teach children as well as adults?
Yes. Younger learners take shorter sessions and work on songs they have chosen, and we are direct with parents about what to expect in the first term.
Is Fretwork a marketplace or a single studio?
A single studio. Every enquiry is read by the tutor who will teach you, and there is no matching system or third-party booking platform in between.
Can I visit before booking a lesson?
Send a lesson enquiry and ask. If you are local, we can usually arrange for you to see the space and ask questions before committing to anything.
Getting started
Send a lesson enquiry with a few details and we will reply with a suggested format and the next available slot. If you would rather ask questions first, that is fine, and you can do it through the same form.
Bring a guitar and a tuner to your first session. Everything else we will work out as we go.
